What are high-reliability electronic components?
To be specific, high-reliability electronic components means the ones that do not fail under the severe environments such as space. In the International Space Station (ISS) currently being developed, for example, failure of onboard electronics directly threatens life of astronauts aboard the ISS. Once meteorological satellites that are indispensable for daily weather forecast fails, it is hard to repair them or launch replacement satellites immediately. Therefore, electronic components used in outer space or aboard aircrafts need to satisfy severe environmental requirements such as a wide operating temperature range (usually -55 to +125 deg. C), radiation hardness, shock tolerance, vibration tolerance, waterproofing, and vacuum resistance. Components that fulfill these requirements are called "high-reliability components."
How is high-reliability assured?
For example, ceramic materials with high thermal insulation are used for component packages to ensure operation in a wide temperature range. In order to guarantee high reliability, the components adopt a variety of technologies and undergo various severe tests.
Why are high-reliability components imported?
Japan is a leading country in the world in terms of production of industrial and consumer electrical components. However, because its aerospace industry is not so active, demand for high-reliability electronic components is small and domestic production of such components is very low. Thus, most of them must be imported from the U.S. or Europe.
